In a hearteningly optimistic move Irish bookmaking firm PaddyPower, on Jan 7th, paid out an estimated $75,000 to bettors who chose Barrack Obama as the Democratic Party nominee for President of the United States in 2008. That’s correct – not the New Hampshire primary winner, but the party nominee. Morning newspapers and some well known blogs went to press with headlines announcing Obama’s expected victory in the New Hampshire primary, getting egg on their faces this morning but only Paddy Power put their money where their mouth is. According to Briedbart.com Paddy Power, said: “From a betting point of view we reckon that it’s game over for Hillary. With each passing day Obama is looking more like a certainty to get the Democratic vote and as far as we’re concerned he’s already past the post. So well done to all who backed him, your winnings await!”
I can only think that this was done out of a mistaken solidarity with a fellow Irishman. Ay Paddy, and who wouldn’t vote for a fine Irishman like Mr. O’bama, now?
