Invest 26 Minute of Your Time: Updated Again
Posted by rotus under politics | Tags: Jeremiah Wright, National Press Club, Obama |Before going off half cocked condemning Barack Obama for what someone told you that Jeremiah Wright said at the National Press Club, sit down and listen to what he actually said. Here is a link to a video of his entire speech. There is a transcript which includes his remarks in the question and answer period afterward, also.
I would be proud to have Rev. Wright speak in my church. His is a message of inclusion and reconciliation. He is not angry, unpatriotic, racist or any of the other things he is being accused of in various right wing or Clintonista blogs.
Update: Obama has issued a statement calling Wright’s statements “outrageous” and saying “When he states and then amplifies such ridiculous propositions as the U.S. government somehow being involved in AIDS, when he suggests Minister Farrakhan somehow represents one of the greatest voices of the 20th and 21st centuries, when he equates the United States’ wartime efforts with terrorism — there are no excuses . . .” I must have missed some of that, maybe Wright said some of those things somewhere else. He did make a number of appearances over the weekend.
The urban legend about the government creating AIDS and spreading it among black people has been going around for years. It shows a lack of critical thinking on Wright’s part to repeat it, but also a healthy distrust of government. Wright cites theTuskegee Study as his source for that comment, in the Q&A period at the National Press Club. That studies of the progress of untreated syphilis on black men did continue until 1972. It isn’t AIDS but it sure makes you wonder about the good old US Government.
I see that most of the comments on this post have been favorable toward Wright. It kind of makes me wonder where my readers come from. Nobody wants to argue with me?

I’m far more upset at McCain for seeking the support of the Rev. Hagee, who continues to claim that the federal levee failure in New Orleans was God’s wrath upon that great city for its sinful ways.
Yet Hagee’s hate speech gets ignored, while Wright’s relatively benign words get repeated ad nauseum.

I watched the broadcast live yesterday. Wright is a verifiable freak show. Obama is toast in Indiana.

I just try to stay away from the political arena on my blog. I made that decision when I started recieving so many threats, even via my home phone which is an unlisted # in my husband’s name.
My very first blog MoonDanzerDelivers was all politics.
But who says I can’t highlight your blog today? I am on my way now to make a post inviting everyone to visit Rotus.

You are now highlighted as my pick for today for a good read related to politics and general discussion.
Now I must attempt to get 3 acres mowed today.
BTW….saw a great clip from the movie The Glen Miller story. Tuxedo Junction….wow…I hope there is a video of this clip…it’s fantastic!!
Thanx…have a great day!!

I watched several of the sermons from which the incendiary quotes were taken. They were actually quite reasonable.

Nice transcript. I like seeing thing as people say them not how they are reported. I believe in the words see for yourself before judging.

I agree totally. The words from Rev. Wright’s sermons were taken out of context, and used to attack Obama. The media created this firestorm that everybody kept throwing gasoline on, and it was getting out of hand.
Obama did what he had to do, not only for his political career, but for Wright’s as well.
Hopefully this will put an end to the media feeding frenzy about the situation and we can get back to the business of nominating a Democratic presidential contender. This is a political race after all, not a religious one.
Once again, good post!

Thanks for sharing! I would always rather get accurate information.

You’re kidding (w)right? The man is a lunatic. This isn’t going away for Obama.
“Obama did what he had to do, not only for his political career, but for Wright’s as well.” So lying is okay to protect your political career… and he really means it! Gack…
Sheeeeeeeeeeeesh.

Hey Fr J,
Did Barack Obama ever have a chance in Indiana anyway?
Candidate speaks at Hitler birthday party
…Tony Zirkle, who is seeking the Republican nomination in Indiana’s 2nd District, stood in front of a painting of Hitler, next to people wearing swastika armbands and with a swastika flag in the background for the speech to the American National Socialist Workers Party in Chicago on Sunday…
The Economist doesn’t think so.
